Saturday, June 28. 2008Finding a Language Exchange Partner
As the common English saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. When learning a new language, practicing your new found language will allow you to learn at a faster rate, while retaining things that you’ve already learned. For me, practicing is extremely important. Since I have a poor memory, I have to use and hear/see words over and over until I finally get it.
Fortunately, there are a TON of language exchange websites out there. I’d thought I would take a moment and review some of the larger ones.
My Language Exchange

My Language Exchange claims to be the largest language exchange community … a claim I would be inclined to agree with. Their interface is nothing fancy, but they have a TON of members, so this would be a great starting point. Posting a profile is free, but contacting members isn’t. It consts $6/month or $24/year. I’d suggest plunking down the $6 and then build up a good group of language exchange partners for a month.
《My Language Exchange 》
The searching capabilities are great on My Language Exchange. You can search by language, country, and even do a text search through profiles.
One small gripe is that the character encoding isn’t correct on some of the emails so the Chinese is all garbled. However, it isn’t anything that a thunderbird plugin can’t easily fix
Mixxer
MixxerThe Mixxer is a totally free site which allows you to post profiles and contact others at no charge. The interface is clean and nice, although the searching capabilities are less than that of some other websites. However, there are many users, so I would also highly recommend this website.
In addition, on the Mixxer, public chats can be held where people can practice languages together. I’m thinking of setting one up some time
In addition, the webmaster is very nice and responsive.
Language Exchange

xLingo has a very nice interface. Most of the basic features are free (searching, contacting members) but $20/year will buy you more advanced features. The basic features are sufficient and I don’t see a lot of need for upgrading. Having only an English interface, it attracts those who already know English. Because of this, I’ve found the other two websites to be more useful. Your mileage may vary depending on what type of language partner you are looking for.
SharedTalk

SharedTalk, hands down, has the nicest, most refined interface out there. SharedTalk takes a completely different tactic to language exchange partners. In stead of providing contact information and then allow users to contact each other, SharedTalk provides both text and voice chat rooms. I prefer to use stand alone instant messaging programs like GTalk, AIM, and the like, so I haven’t tried SharedTalk very much. However, it is definitely something to check out! Also, it is made by RosettaStone, an expert in teaching languages.
So, now that you know all these websites, go out and practice! It’s the only way that you’ll get better!!
And, of course, I’m always opening to language exchange. Feel free to contact me!
